"The Next Memphis"
The Port of Shreveport-Bossier has already been called "The Next Memphis" because of its perfect geographic location and an existing superior network of rail, air, and interstate highways.

United Parcel Service ranks Shreveport-Bossier among the top five cities in the country capable of reaching the largest segments of the population with next day service. Nearly 30 million people and some of America's strongest consumer markets, including the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, are within one day's reach by motor freight.

Committed to intermodalism from the beginning, the Port gives shippers a complete range of transportation options - barge, rail, and truck.

Barge
The nation's waterways provide an energy efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly transportation network. The U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration lists these advantages of barge transport:

  • Energy Efficient.
  • Cargo Capacities.
  • Extremely Safe.
  • Reduces Congestion.
  • Produces Little Air/Noise Pollution.
  • Minimal Land Use/Social Impact.
  • Produces Multiple Benefits, including recreation, flood control, wildlife habitat, irrigation and industrial use.

Cargoes handled at the Port of Shreveport-Bossier include liquid products, aggregate, coiled steel, plate steel, fertilizer, ship modules, over dimensional cargoes, containers, scrap steel, steel beams, coal, tire chips, logs, and industrial wastewater.

Louisiana is the most "maritime state" in the United States. The South Louisiana ports of the Lower Mississippi River constitute the world's largest maritime complex, moving far more cargo than Rotterdam, Hong Kong, or Singapore.

Rail
A comprehensive rail network provides service to and with the Port. The Port complex includes ten miles of railroad track which links to Union Pacific main line rail. Local access to the KCS railroad is available. On-dock rail and a rail switch yard are on site.

Two Port-owned and operatered locomotives are available for immediate rail car switching. The Port provides all switching services within the complex. In addition, the Port offers more than 20,000' for rail storage.

Truck
Located only minutes from Interstates 20 and 49, the Port is a natural multimodal transportation and distribution center for businesses operating out of the Ark-La-Tex and Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Louisiana Highway 1 and the Red River serve as natural Port boundaries. Three 24-foot wide access roads off of Highway 1 into the Port complex exceed state highway load limits.

Approximately 20 trucking lines connect Shreveport-Bossier to the continental United States, Canada and Mexico.

The I-69 preferred corridor will be routed through the Port and thus strengthening our position.
